However, researchers have come up with a solution for maintaining good mental and physical condition.
An unpublished study by the University of Guelph has found that snowmobiling can be an interesting way to maintain a balanced lifestyle by covering up the required physical time. Based on the findings, the Canadian Council of Snowmobile Organizations (CCSO) announced the benefits of indulging in recreational snowmobiling. Though often underestimated, the above announcement will encourage more people to engage in snowmobiling.
Snowmobiling as good as any other winter activity
Besides fresh air and the opportunity to hang out with loved ones, snowmobiling assists in developing effective coping mechanisms and health. This keeps both psychiatric and physical disorders at bay. Considering the advantages of moderate to vigorous physical activities, the physical demands of snowmobiling that included both cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal aspects were examined. The role of the activity’s location in determining physical demands was also evaluated.
For understanding the effectiveness of snowmobiling, the results of the American College of Sports Medicine’s Compendium of Physical Activities were compared with the results of the above-mentioned study. It was found that the moderate intensity activities range between 3 and 6 metabolic equivalent (MET) and snowmobiling fell under the same category. The unit of MET represents the amount of energy required to maintain human function while sitting or lying awake at rest.
While the average MET for groomed trail riding was almost 4, mountain riding scored around 7 METs. Based on the scores of all winter activities, snowmobiling can be classified in the same category as chopping wood, snow shoveling and recreational ice-skating.
The study is helping people understand that snowmobiling is an excellent way to alleviate depression and prevent any chronic health conditions. Therefore, there is no two opinions about the fact that snowmobiling is good for the holistic development of a person, both mentally and physically.
