Guiding negative emotions for building better mental health

A sound mental health is a must for the overall well-being of a person. Individuals who are emotionally healthy exercise a greater degree of control over their thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Having a resilient mental health does not mean that a person will never experience bad times, emotional problems or mental illnesses.

Physically healthy individuals enjoy the advantage of recuperating sooner from an illness or an injury than others. Similarly, mentally healthy people are better-equipped to turn the corner and overcome adversity, trauma, and stress. When life dishes out psychological stressors in one or the other form, they are able to endure the consequences and emerge out of all the problems.

At a glance, it may seem that emotionally resilient individuals have inbuilt tools for coping all kinds of stresses and strains and a compass to guide them through difficult situations. However, these adaptive mechanisms and positive outlook are not beyond everybody’s reach.

With some practice, a person can attain a healthy state of mind and empower himself or herself to turn the tables on negative emotions in healthy ways. One way to achieve this is to remember and implement the key objectives of the acronym PATH (pause, acknowledge, think and help), especially while encountering unpleasant emotions. A short description of the main principles of the acronym PATH will assist people in overcoming any kind of stressful situation:

  • Pause: A person who toils without respite is more likely to make blunders while acting on his or her impulses. Taking a pause allows an individual to break free and look at his or her source of emotions from a broader and calmer perspective.
  • Acknowledge: The next step ‘acknowledge’ entails recognizing and admitting the validity of negative feelings surging in a person. Despite the response that negative emotions instigate, it is important to know that it’s okay to feel that way.
  • Think: After identifying one’s negative feelings, a person can overcome them by finding effective remedial measures to make himself or herself feel better.
  • Help: In the final step, a person enforces the pillars of PATH into effective action to help himself or herself deal with negative emotions.

Key hurdles to a sound mental health

Maladaptive coping mechanisms can prevent people from effectively addressing their negative emotions. While there may be hidden or underlying causes behind the manifestation of such disruptive sensations, the following feelings are increasingly associated with negative emotions:

  • Denial: During the state of denial, a person fails to acknowledge his or her wrongdoings or depressive mental state. As a result, such people are unable to agree that they need help. Bottling up of simmering emotions can increase the risk of behaving in a harmful manner.
  • Withdrawal: Unlike the temporary need for privacy, withdrawal is the act of isolating oneself from people and not taking up various activities. While there are various reasons behind a person’s withdrawal from society, it also forebodes the likelihood of depression. Therefore, it is important to communicate and reaffirm relationship with others.
  • Bullying: Bullying is a social act that includes the use of force, intimidation, taunt and mockery to display a hold over others. Although individuals who bully do it to feel better about themselves, the entire act of bullying is harmful to both the bully and the victim that fails to address any underlying causes of mental health problems.
  • Substance use: Many individuals coping with the psychological stressors or symptoms of mental disorders resort to drugs or alcohol to temporarily escape negative thoughts, painful memories and bouts of anxiety. However, in the process, they run the risk of developing an addiction and increase the chance of worsening their symptoms of mental disorders.

Overcome negative emotions by determining triggers

A healthy state of mind gives an individual an upper hand in managing stress, overcoming challenges, building relationships, and bouncing from setbacks and hardships. Despite the prevalence of mental disorders, most individuals display reluctance in improving their situations due to increased stigma.
