Cost-effective medication for treating ADHD

Cost-effective medication for treating ADHD

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental disorder that includes symptoms like lack of concentration, forgetfulness, hyperactivity and the inability to complete any task, all that can create unwanted behaviour among school-going children as well as working adults. Treatment through medication can help reduce such symptoms though the procedure can vary from one individual to another as the same medication may not work for all. Some of the common medications that are used for the treatment of ADHD include stimulants like amphetamines, methamphetamine, methylphenidate and non-stimulants like atomoxetine (Strattera), clonidine and guanfacine.

Cost remains a significant deciding factor in assessing the capability of the general public to opt for an effective treatment for the condition; the high rates of medication may leave certain sections of the society unable to afford treatment. Some of the medications come along with a huge price tag, therefore, there is a need to have more generic medications for treating such disorders.

ADHD medications have side effects

In order to understand better the use of generic medication for treating ADHD, the advantages and disadvantages should be further explored. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released standard guidelines stating that the generic medicines are identical to their branded counterparts in terms of their bioequivalence which includes dosage form, safety, strength, route of administration, quality, performance characteristics and intended use.

It is to be noted that though the specifications might be similar, the effects of the drugs might be different, where generic medicines may work slower. Causes for concern is when inactive ingredients in generic medication are absorbed in a slower or faster rate than the branded drugs, causing tolerability problems for the patient or a patient may have an allergic reaction to an inactive ingredient in a generic medication, though he or she may also have allergies to the branded drugs’ inactive ingredient.

Stimulants are also known to raise blood pressure and heart rate, causing experts to worry about utilizing these drugs. Due to this reason, non-stimulant medications are also used, such as Strattera, a generic drug also known by its generic name as atomoxetine, has been recently approved by the FDA. The agency mentioned in its press release of May 30, 2017 that the first generic versions of strattera can now be used for the treatment of ADHD in children and adult patients. However, the approval also came with a set of warnings as the clinical trials indicated that the drug has side effects like decreased appetite, nausea, fatigue and mood swings among other. It, therefore, stresses that during the treatment, the drug must be dispensed with a “Medication Guide” that describes the drug’s uses and warnings.
